Cannon Drive Construction Project

Plan for Resulting Parking Implications

A major construction project at Ohio State to straighten and elevate Cannon Drive, a north/south roadway through campus, is having significant implications on proximate parking at the Wexner Medical Center (WMC). In September 2017, the university began the project, with a primary goal of providing flood protection and creating 12 developable acres of land (learn more). This resulted in the closure of the Polo and Dodd lots, which provided parking for approximately 2,100 CampusParc customers (many of them WMC faculty, staff, and students).

CampusParc anticipates lot closures may prompt a “ripple effect” with the possibility to displace permit holders across campus. As faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors adjust their parking options as a result of this closure and construction interruptions, impact may be felt widely across campus.  We encourage you to plan accordingly and expect potential disruptions to your parking routine. Please also familiarize yourself with related campus bus changes that may help inform your parking choices.

Parking Information and Recommendations for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff will continue to have choices regarding their parking:

  • Those who prefer proximate parking and have historically parked in the Polo or Dodd Lots with an A or B permit may choose to seek parking elsewhere on Central Campus. Campus parking maps can be found via the CampusParc homepage under “Maps.”
  • Remember that an A permit holder can park in any A, B, or C parking space. B permit holders can park in any B or C parking space, and all permits valid for Central Campus parking may also park in the remote Park and Ride lots.
  • If the parking permit selected is not meeting your needs, you can exchange it for another type of permit, within limitations. Contact Customer Service for specific information and availability.
  • The university is now providing enhanced shuttle service from the Carmack Lots on West Campus, with drop-off at the new Herrick Transit Center.
  • The Cannon Drive project, in addition to closing parking lots, will also result in construction congestion near the Wexner Medical Center, changing routes and access to garages. We encourage you to plan ahead and watch for signage that may detour you from traditional routes to parking. Current information about the project will always be available here.
  • Check GarageTracker on the CampusParc homepage and on WMC’s OneSource, which provides virtually real-time information on availability in campus garages.
  • Customers who have reduced mobility and need parking accommodations are eligible to apply for an ADA Accessible parking permit here.

Parking Information and Recommendations for Students

Students will continue to have choices regarding their parking:

  • If you park on Central Campus, the closure of the Polo and Dodd Lots could result in a “ripple effect” of A and B permit parkers moving to the Stadium Lot and elsewhere, parking in available A and B spaces as well as those designated for C permits. Be prepared for increased demand (and an earlier fill time) for parking in the Stadium and St. John parking lots and plan accordingly. You may want to consider parking in the Buckeye Lots and taking the shuttle to campus. Please also familiarize yourself with upcoming campus bus changes that may help inform your parking choices.
  • Effective August 1, 2017, CABS routes changed to accommodate the relocation of students, faculty, and staff. The Med Center Express shifted to the Carmack Lots, and a majority of commuter students were relocated to the Buckeye Lots located along Fred Taylor Drive. The Campus Loops bus service will service the Buckeye Lots and continue to make stops throughout the academic campus. A CXC parking permit provides commuter students access to the Buckeye Lots as well as a limited number of spaces in the West Campus Carmack 5 Lot for the same price as a WC permit.

Parking Information and Recommendations for Visitors and Patients

There are dedicated patient and visitor parking garages on campus that are the preferred location for you to park; however, we want everyone to be aware of parking pressures and traffic impacts that may result from this major construction project.

Check GarageTracker on the CampusParc homepage, which provides virtually real-time information on availability in campus garages.
